Merriman Schmitt Project Wins Green Building Award
April 29, 2009
CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 29, 2009 – The Microban International, Ltd., headquarters facility in Huntersville, has earned a Green Building of America Award. The building, which opened last fall, was designed by Merriman Schmitt Architects and built by Choate Construction, both of Charlotte.
The $8.5 million Microban facility will be featured in the “Southeast Green Success Stories” publication produced by Real Estate & Construction Review for release this summer. The project was chosen from among 2,500 “green” building projects submitted for the award.
Microban manufactures antimicrobials -- products that are used in everything from children’s toys to grocery carts to prevent the growth of bacteria, molds and mildew. The company’s headquarters includes general office, research and development, laboratory and warehouse space.
“The headquarters facility is a green building for a green company,” said Steve Schmitt, AIA, president of Merriman Schmitt Architects. “It’s a clean, open environment that was designed and built to achieve Silver-level LEED status by the U.S. Green Building Council.”
The project was featured in the Dec. 12, 2008, issue of The Charlotte Business Journal. Click to read the story. To learn more about the project, you can also visit our Gallery.
